Two top women Naxal leaders held

GIRIDIH: Two top women Maoist leaders were arrested from a private hospital at Rampurhat in South 24 Parganas of West Bengal on Monday. One of the arrested women, Akansha Marandi alias Sheela Didi, was a zonal commander and involved in the murder of Anup Marandi, the son of the former chief minister Babulal Marandi at Chilkhari in October 2008, police said.

Akansha used to look after the legal cell of the Naxalites, said Giridih police chief Amol V Honkar here.

The arrested duo the other being Parishila Murmu are being interrogated as police have found evidence of their involvement in several cases of violence, including murder. A team led by additional superintendent of police Sanjay Kumar raided Asha clinic at Rampurhat where the two leaders were admitted. Police did not find any arms from them.

The two were brought to the Giridih district police headquarters for interrogation. SP said.

He said the two women were involved in all extremists activities in the district. They were members of the decision-making group and used to lead the Naari Mukti (women’s liberation) organisation. They used to plan and lead the execution teams of Maoists violent groups.

Honkar said Akansha looked after the legal cell of the Maoists in Jharkhand and handled the trial of Maoists jailed in different prisons of the state. According to the SP, there were many top Maoists jailed in Giridih jail. Security of the jail has been beefed up following jail break at Chaibasa last week.
