Ohioan guilty of murder in bathtub drowning of wife
LEBANON, Ohio — Jurors in southwest Ohio have reached a verdict in a man’s third murder trial in the 2008 drowning of his wife in their bathtub.
The Warren County jury had the case for about 12 hours before reporting they had a verdict. It wasn’t immediately announced today.
Jurors got the case yesterday after closing arguments — and a twist. Prosecutors asked for the first time that jurors also consider the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter against 30-year-old Ryan Widmer.
A conviction on that charge would mean jurors agree that Widmer assaulted his 24-year-old wife, Sarah, and caused her death but didn’t mean to kill her.
Jurors in his first trial convicted him of murder; that verdict was thrown out because of juror misconduct. A second trial ended in a hung jury.
