Employer charged with maid abuse

SINGAPORE: A 31-year-old woman has been hauled to court for allegedly burning her Indonesian maid’s left arm with a heated metal spoon and scratching her body and hand with a pin.

Soh Meiyun, who faces three counts of maid abuse, is also accused of using a bamboo pole and hanger to hit 25-year-old Lilis Sriyatun on the cheeks.

The self-employed woman is believed to have committed the offence in a flat at Compassvale Link in April and May 2009.

Soh will return to court next Wednesday.

If convicted of maid abuse, she can be jailed up to 18 months and fined a maximum of S$1,500 for each charge.
