2 women end life to escape harassment in Bangalore

Suspected dowry harassment forced two young women to commit suicide in as many incidents in a day.

Rekha, 19, was found hanging in her house in Lakshmidevinagar, Laggere, on Tuesday, when her husband, Rajesh Babu, a driver, returned home around 7 pm, the police said on Wednesday.

The couple was married in May last year.
Rekha’s parents arrived in the city from their residence at Alur in Hassan district, and lodged a complaint of harassment over dowry against Babu and his father.

Her parents reportedly told the police that she had told them of the harassment several times in the past.

The police arrested Babu on Wednesday, and were searching for his father, who had gone missing.

Rekha’s body was handed over to her parents after a post-mortem examination in the Victoria Hospital.

In another incident reported on Tuesday, 24-year-old Savithramma self-immolated allegedly to escape the harassment by her husband, Manjunath Prasad. She died instantly at their house in Basavanagar.

Prasad had married Tamil Nadu native Savithramma four years ago, and the couple was issueless. She was allegedly harassed constantly for more dowry, which forced her to douse herself in kerosene and set herself on fire.
The police have arrested Prasad.
